Reunion of Elisabeth Sutherland's Descendants

6th February 2000

John Sutherland and his wife Mary (nee Gordon) sailed on  the Oriental, the first emigrant ship to leave London, on the 15th September 1839.  They arrived in Wellington 31st January 1940.  Elisabeth was born on the 14th June 1840, reportedly the first white female born in Wellington.

Elisabeth married James Tait, 30th May 1861, and they eventually bought Waikare Station, Hawkes Bay in 1865.  James drowned at Waihua on 26th July 1870.  Elisabeth remarried on 14th August 1873 to Murdoch McIver.

The Waikare property has been sold after 135 years in the family, and so it was decided to have a last family reunion there

We started the day by going to the Wairoa cemetry, where most of the family are buried.

On The way from Wairoa to Waikare we stopped off at Mohaka.  Following is a photo of Mohaka Station.  The house is now situated where the old cookhouse  and orchard used to be.  The Mohaka river is in the foreground.  Elisabeth bought Mohaka Station for the McIver sons, and she lived here in her later years.
