Murdoch McIver, the son of Donald and Catherine McIver of Stornoway, was born on 30th October 1843. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1865. On 14th August 1873 he married Elizabeth Tait, the daughter of John and Mary Sutherland, born in Wellington on 14th June 1840. Elizabeth had lost her first husband, James Tait, in a tragic drowning accident in July 1870. Murdoch and Elizabeth had three sons, Donald, Robert (Robbie) and Murdoch (Mutu). Elizabeth and Murdoch are buried side by side in the Wairoa Cemetery.
